YOUR INSURANCE COVERAGE

Students on UCEAP will be covered by one or more insurance plans.

UCEAP Travel Insurance Plan

All UCEAP participants are automatically enrolled and covered by the UCEAP travel insurance plan while on UCEAP.

UCEAP travel insurance provides benefits anywhere in the world; coverage begins 14 days before a student’s official program start date and ends 31 days after their program’s official end date.

Note: The UCEAP travel insurance plan does not satisfy the Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC) requirement of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). UCEAP travel insurance is required and cannot be waived.

Questions? Contact 888-293-9229 (inside US), 011-610-293-9229 (outside US), or claims@acitpa.com.

UC Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP)

All UCEAP participants are also automatically enrolled in and assessed fees for the UC Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP).

Note: UC SHIP does comply with the Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC) requirement of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Students have 2 options:

  1. Remain enrolled in UC SHIP and pay the UC SHIP fees ($741.90/qtr) via UCLA BruinBill by the deadlines (fall – 9/20/18; winter – 12/20/18; spring – 3/20/19), OR
  2. Request to waive out of UC SHIP if you don’t wish to be covered by UC SHIP and have an alternate insurance plan that complies with the  2018-2019 UC SHIP Waiver Criteria . Your alternate plan must satisfy the Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC) requirement of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Complete the online waiver application during the waiver period (through September 20, 2017). Please note that the UCEAP Travel Insurance provided by the University of California Education Abroad Program does not meet the UC SHIP Waiver Criteria.

Financial Aid for UC SHIP

  • Students who receive financial aid may be eligible to receive a UC SHIP grant toward the cost of their UC SHIP fee while on UCEAP.  Students who have received the UC SHIP grant in the past can expect to receive a similar level of funding toward UC SHIP fees while on UCEAP if they applied for aid on time and their overall level of need has not changed.
  • Students who receive financial aid but are not eligible to receive a UC SHIP grant will be awarded a federal student loan to help cover this cost.
  • Financial aid, if accepted on the Financial Aid Notification (FAN), will be disbursed to cover these fees.  If your UC SHIP grant or other financial aid is not disbursed by the UC SHIP payment deadline, students should directly make the UC SHIP payment by the deadline and then wait for the financial aid to be disbursed and refunded to you.

Questions? Contact UCLA Financial Aid & Scholarship Staff.

International Students

Important:  Please be aware that failure to make UC SHIP payments by the deadlines may result in your UC course enrollment and visa status being dropped.  It is essential that you meet the UC SHIP payment deadlines to avoid these major complications.
