Company Description: Biorock undertakes coral reef surveillance and restoration, community education and advocacy.
Coral restoration projects are vital for the continuation of coral reefs. Climate change, mass coral bleaching, and pollution all are threats to the future of coral reefs. Over half of Indonesia’s coral reefs have already been destroyed, threatening the livelihoods of around 33 million people.
Biorock leads restoration projects by working in collaboration and partnership with local communities. Along with implementing restoration projects, it works with communities, government, and private sectors, to create a sustainable cycle of impact through science, conservation, and advocacy.
Intern Role and Responsibilities: Your general role & responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Researching the practice of unsustainable fishing practices in Indonesia.
  • Researching and identifying the factors that prevent small-holder fishers and fish farmers from moving to more sustainable practices in different regions.
  • Analyzing campaigns and suggesting ways to optimize future ones.
  • Researching and compiling donor personas for the organization.
  • Preparing stakeholder communications on the environmental impact of Biorock’s programs that cater to various stakeholder audiences.
  • Producing a series of recommendations, presentations and materials to be used by Biorock as part of its campaign and education work.

Coral Triangle Center

Company Description: Coral Triangle Center (CTC) is an independent, non-profit foundation. Its goal is to promote the
conservation of marine biodiversity and the sustainable management of marine and coastal
resources across the Coral Triangle (CT). Coral reefs in the CT have faced threats from coastal
development, destructive/overfishing fishing, tropical storms, and coral bleaching events.

Intern Role and Responsibilities: Your general role & responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist CTC communication activities, specifically in developing maps for popular
    audiences.
  • Assist CTC’s GIS and Knowledge Management specialist in designing and
    developing the spatial data management and spatial analysis for the MPA dataset.
  • Work under the supervision of CTC’s Regional Communications Coordinator and
    GIS and KM Lead.
  • Coordinate with CTC’s field learning sites, training team, and communications
    team to ensure that tasks are completed efficiently and on time.

Kopernik

Company Description: Kopernik is an R&D lab for social and environmental challenges.

Kopernik takes innovative approaches to solving seemingly intractable challenges and works to find efficacious solutions that reduce poverty by experimenting with potential solutions that address common challenges facing people living in rural areas.
Examples of recent projects include water conservation projects, reducing reliance on agricultural chemicals, supporting coffee farmers, and promoting women-run businesses in rural areas. The organization caters to many different stakeholders and is looking for a way to measure the impact of its unique model of experimentation to help it to grow.

Intern Role and Responsibilities: Your general role & responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Intern Role: #1

  • Gaining a familiarization with Kopernik’s experimental model.
  • Producing a benchmarking report of impact measurements used by leading NGOs.
  • Supporting the creation of a robust methodology for Kopernik to assess the effectiveness of its experiments across a range of core objectives, possibly encompassing both quantitative or qualitative methods.
  • Devising ways to incorporate these methodologies into funding proposals.
  • Participate in the decision-making process about the key outcomes of interest, within the context of impact measurements.
  • Developing ways to present impact measurements that will resonate with key stakeholders.
  • Preparing reports on key finding.

Intern Role: #2

  • Support the report development of Unmet Needs Research 2024: Seaweed in Papua. This supports the livelihoods of fishers and farmers in five villages around Jayapura, the provincial capital, and Biak.
  • Conduct thorough desk research to gather relevant data and identify best practice in other countries with similar context.
  • Collaborate with the team in data analysis, drawing meaningful insights for the development of report writing.
  • In collaboration with the team, she/he will draft well-structured and comprehensive reports synthesizing research findings and analysis.
  • Provide support in geospatial research, contributing to the analytical aspects of Solutions Lab projects.
  • Contribute to the creation and refinement of the Solutions Catalog writings.
  • Assist in the formulation of proposals and contribute to the development of detailed project reports
  • Contribute to the SolLab team discussions, sharing insights and ideas to enhance project outcomes.

PKP Community Center

Company Description: The PKP Community Center (PKP) started as a daycare for disabled children, so their mothers can go to work. It has since expanded to provide life skills training and wellbeing programs for women who are mothers of disabled children, divorced, single mothers, infertile, transgender, and who have financial struggles.
Although the earliest Balinese women’s rights movement dates back to the 1930s, cultural norms still dictate the opportunities offered to Balinese women. As a result, PKP Community Centre has an overall goal to facilitate women’s empowerment and to foster gender equality of Balinese women and girls in the local area, which it pursues through multiple programs. As part of their mission, PKP provides job skills training and support programs, helping women earn a living from selling food and English classes – and provides support for divorced women who face stigma in the community. The job training that PKP provides helps families who feel stressed due to financial difficulties.

Intern Role and Responsibilities: Your general role & responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Research and Data Analysis

  • Exploring innovative approaches for addressing economic empowerment challenges for women.
  • Researching and presenting on emerging social enterprise models.
  • Researching new potential partners.
  • Defining ways to improve data collection and analysis on the impact of PKP’s programs on the lives of Balinese women and girls.

Policy Development and Evaluation

  • Identifying areas of improvement and proposing evidence-based solutions.
  • Preparing reports on research findings and program evaluations. These reports will be used to inform PKP’s strategies and to communicate with stakeholders.
  • Assisting in the evaluation approaches of existing programs such as job skills training, cooking and English classes.

Stakeholder Engagement and Communication

  • Identifying opportunities where PKP can influence the debate on women’s issues.
  • Researching content and updating written materials and website content in English.
  • Attending team meetings and community outreach programs.
  • Engaging with stakeholders to understand their needs and perspectives. This may involve conducting interviews, focus groups, or surveys.

Fundraising

Pratisara Bumi Foundation

Company Description: Pratisara Bumi Foundation (PBF) supports young people and women champions in rural Indonesia in the design of solutions for sustainable development centered on local wisdom, environmental protection, and economic justice.
PBF works closely with women and youth groups at the grassroots level to support their work and growth journey to be leaders in their communities. As such, PBF supports a range of UN Sustainable Development goals, including SDG 1 (End Poverty), SDG 4 (Inclusive and Equitable Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 9 (Innovation, Sustainable Industrialization, and Resilient and Infrastructure), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Sustainable Consumption and Production) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
The foundation is partnering with the United Nations to design programs to assist under-resourced communities across Indonesia to build sustainable communities. Terra Water Indonesia

Company Description: Terra Water is a foundation that focuses on widening access to clean, safe drinking water across Indonesia. Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world, with a population of 273 million people and is Southeast Asia’s largest economy, but many rural communities and residents of some less developed urban areas struggle with infrastructure and poor health. For many families, water sources are distant, contaminated or expensive, and household sanitation is unaffordable. Currently, around 18 million Indonesians lack access to safe water and many people do not understand safe practices around accessing clean water.
Terra works with a network of local and international organizations that help identify and deliver filters to families in Indonesia with the most need, and educate them on good WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) practices. While its focus is UN SDG 6 (Safe and Sustainable Water and Sanitation for All), its activities in the field either directly or indirectly touch on multiple other SDG’s.

Intern Role and Responsibilities: Your general role & responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Supporting the development of a new Theory of Change (TOC) methodology for planning, monitoring, and evaluating future initiatives.
  • Identifying additional areas for data collection to support future grant applications.

El Foro Nacional por Colombia

Company Description: The Foro Nacional por Colombia (National Forum for Colombia) is a non-governmental, non-profit civil organization that was founded in 1982 as an initiative of Colombian academics and researchers interested in contributing to the strengthening of democracy in Colombia, building peace, coexistence, diversity, plurality, and active citizenship. Following the ratification of the new Colombian Constitution in 1991, they opened new fields of work such as advising government entities on issues of management and public policies. Later in 2016, following the signing of the Peace Agreement between the Colombian Government and the FARC, they have also orientated work to contributing to the construction of peace and coexistence in Colombia. The organisation works throughout Colombia and their principal activities include, but are not limited to; research, investigation and the publication of studies, advice and support for organizations, peacebuilding, reporting of political incidences and the dissemination of information, among others.

Fundación Catalina Muñoz

Company Description: Fundación Catalina Muñoz is an NGO that constructs housing for families in extreme poverty. Their main goal is to contribute to the reduction of the housing deficit in Colombia, and to improve housing. In the past 17 years, they have constructed more than 3,800 homes in 28 Departments across Colombia. They also work with individuals, families, and groups within the
communities and manage social programs to improve Public Spaces. Our partner has recently launched a new Eco-spaces Project, this will emphasize agricultural production within Urban environments. These construction projects are undertaken with a strong social dimension.

Fundación para la Reconciliación

Company Description: We are working with an organization which contributes to the construction of peace in Colombia and the world by promoting a culture of care, forgiveness and reconciliation. They believe that it is not enough to resolve conflicts militarily or with the best official agreements, as peace is fragile. It is to ensure that victims and perpetrators forgive and reconcile in such a way that both advance in the construction of worthy life projects, while recovering three fundamental pillars of existence: the meaning of life, self-assurance and socialization. In 2006, the NGO received an Honorable Mention in the UNESCO Education for Peace Prize for its practical contributions and impact on the creation of a culture of coexistence and peace.
Intern Role and Responsibilities: Your general role & responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting the team by updating project documents in English and Spanish
  • Research and some writing on Colombia related issues, including the armed conflict, human rights, post-conflict reconstruction and International Law

Company Description: REDEPAZ (National Network of Citizen Initiatives for Peace and Against War) was founded in 1993 as an expression of disagreement with the violent solution of conflicts and as a strategy from organized civil society to deactivate the mechanisms of war and peacefully transform conflicts. REDEPAZ has developed actions and methodologies that seek to promote citizen participation in the construction of comprehensive peace with social justice, local and regional democracy, articulating

Intern Role and Responsibilities: Your general role & responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Researching and logging instances of violence within Colombia, where and when they happened, what happened, who were the victims, the perpetrators, and any other important details and then using that information to create bimonthly reports on the state of violence within the nation.
  • Writing a comparison on the current peace process with ELN with the 2016 peace process with the FARC.
  • Generating a database of potential future international partners, analyzing the legal frameworks that might limit or prevent these partnerships and drafting introduction letters to send to the organizations and governments.

Sisma Mujer

Company Description: Intern Colombia has partnered with an NGO who was founded in 1998 and has contributed to the consolidation of women’s rights in Colombia, working with women victims of gender violence and discrimination, both domestic and in the armed conflict. Our partner focuses on human rights and law to strengthen the social processes for the individual and collective empowerment of women. Their mission is to build a Colombia without violence against women and girls. They have helped more than 25,000 women, girls and young victims of violence all across Colombia. Among them are women from rural areas, afro-Colombians, indigenous, social activists, refugees, politicians, exiles and migrants and human rights defenders.

Innocence Project Argentina

Company Description: The Innocence Project is an NGO with three main objectives: research, analysis, and litigation for cases of people who have been wrongfully convicted; the promotion of related legislature and public policy; and the training of students on this area of law.
Intern Role and Responsibilities: Your general role & responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Be in charge of the preliminary analysis of the cases under study by IP Argentina
  • Analyze the sentences and the resources of each one of the assigned causes and define if it is appropriate to reject the case or, on the contrary, if it should be analyzed in depth, according to the intervention criteria of the Innocence Project Argentina.
  • For each case, make a presentation before the IP Argentina team in order to present the main points and the arguments for which she considers that it should continue under study or be rejected.
  • In some cases it may be necessary to carry out an activity on the ground before making a decision, such as interviewing the person requesting our intervention. In these cases, the intern will be in charge of completing the proposed task, with the support of the program coordinator.
  • On the other hand, if on the date of their internship we have a trial in progress that we must attend, the intern will be the one who will represent IP Argentina in the hearings. The objective of this task is for her to understand how an oral debate is developed in Argentina.
  • Develop management tasks and assist the Innocence Project Argentina staff with the purpose of becoming actively involved in the organization and daily operation of an NGO. These tasks involve, among others, assistance in the administration of material resources, assistance in the organization of institutional project activities, etc.

Mensajeros de la Paz

Company Description: Mensajeros de la Paz is a non-governmental, secular organization, declared of public utility and of national and international scope. It was founded in Spain by Father Ángel García Rodríguez in 1962. In its beginnings, Mensajeros de la Paz created homes to receive children and young people deprived of a family environment or in a situation of abandonment, offering them the closest thing to a family. The intern may support the curation of legal memos based on current drafts to deliver a short thesis sentence that briefly identifies the issue and the applicable rule and states a short answer. The intern may ensure that the procedural posture of the case and the burdens and standards of proof of well-noted and any additional references or research is cited.
  • Case Study Review & Creation: The intern may study local cases relevant with civil, criminal and tax law and keep our clients posted with updated news and information including in-depth analysis on the cases and full report on this regard. Depending on skills the intern can recommend possible precautionary measures and points the client may have to take into consideration. The intern may also be curating and editing materials for release of information on various legal issues and topics to the public. These may include blogs, videos, infographics, art cards, public service announcements. Aside from editing, interns may be asked to do some research on the materials to be covered and included in the content.
  • Research Project: The intern may conduct a large-scale research project within our defined focus. The intern may need to acquire the data, organize the data, analyze the information, and create a full report with key findings. This project may require strong organization, data analysis, data collecting, research, written communication, and project management.
