Internship Role and Responsibilities

Astungkara Way

Company Description: Astungkara Way is a social enterprise working to accelerate the transition to regenerative agriculture in Indonesia. The water that supplies rice farms in Bali comes from the subak system, a unique irrigation system to Bali in Indonesia. The irrigation system in Bali poses particular challenges for farms that are trying to switch to organic methods, as they are significantly affected by whatever practices are happening at nearby farms (especially those upstream). Astungkara Way sought research and design for low cost and natural methods to filter its water supply.

Intern Role and Responsibilities: Your general role & responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct water testing to determine the current water quality on various parts of the site.
  • Research water purification/filtration options and shortlist the strongest candidates.
  • Design a low-cost primary filter and focus on a low-tech design that can be easily scaled to different locations.
  • Gather feedback from different stakeholders to ensure the design poses no negative impacts on the environment.
  • Develop prototypes of proposed design.
  • Present findings to the organization.

Azura Indonesia (Role 1)

Company Description: Azura Indonesia is a social enterprise developing electric fishing boats. Indonesia is a seafaring nation home to over 500,000 fishing boats and the fishing industry employs around 12 million Indonesians. Currently, fisher people in Indonesia rely on diesel powered boats and spend around half of their income on diesel fuel. Solar powered electric boats offer the chance to reduce costs and improve the livelihoods of people who fish for a living and reduce emissions at the same time.

Azura Indonesia is developing electric boats, the infrastructure required to support them, and researching/developing higher-performance boats. Challenges include the corrosion of solar panels and the fact that most boats are wooden and absorb seawater which makes them heavier and harder to power.

Azura Indonesia installs solar panels in the homes of fisher people where they can charge their batteries in between fishing trips.

Intern Role and Responsibilities: Your general role & responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Investigate how conditions such as high temperatures, humidity, rain, salt mist, strong winds, tectonic activity, and flooding can impact the performance of solar panels on the Balinese coast.
  • Assess current levels of degradation of solar panels and gather field data at sites.
  • Create a report on the corrosion process on solar panels at sites.
  • Undertake research into coatings and treatment protocols that could reduce the degradation of panels.
  • Present to prospective investors
  • Develop a maintenance schedule for the solar panels.
  • Research how to build more resilient panels in the future.

Coral Triangle Center

Company Description: Coral Triangle Center (CTC) is an independent, non-profit foundation. Its goal is to promote the conservation of marine biodiversity and the sustainable management of marine and coastal resources across the Coral Triangle (CT). Coral reefs in the coral triangle have faced threats from coastal development, destructive/overfishing fishing, tropical storms, and coral bleaching events. CTC conducts field operations in remote areas of Indonesia and Timor-Leste. It currently conducts coral surveys using the Point Intercept Transect (PIT) method, which is scientifically valid, but relatively out of date and limits the amount of data a diver can collect using SCUBA equipment. CTC is looking to update their survey methods to integrate image-based data collection methods with automated image analysis approaches into their coral reef health monitoring procedures.

Intern Role and Responsibilities: Your general role & responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Produced a report and literature review for integrating LiDAR data and hyperspectral imagery for coastal and coral reef mapping.
  • Assessed feasibility of integration of automated image analysis, underwater robots. hyperspectral imaging, and LiDAR technologies into coral monitoring.
  • Produced designs for an educational mangrove exhibit that to simulate the protection mangroves provide to coastal communities.
  • Captured structure from motion scans of mangrove trees and pneumatophores to turn them into 3D models and 3D printed objects for the exhibit.
  • Assisted with developing scripts for the creating automated field reports for CTC.
  • Participated in a field trip to Nusa Penida where CTC has a Marine Protected Area (MPA) learning site and coral restoration activities.

Kopernik (Role 1)

Company Description: Kopernik is an R&D lab for social and environmental challenges.
Kopernik is one of the most respected NGOs in Indonesia. It takes innovative approaches to solving seemingly intractable challenges and works to find efficacious solutions that reduce poverty by experimenting with potential solutions that address common challenges facing people living in the last mile. The organization undertakes three core types of work to achieve this. Kopernik undertakes experimentation, last mile consulting and technology distribution.

One of Kopernik’s projects is a water stewardship pilot project in North Bali. Water is a precious commodity in Bali and one that is increasingly in short supply. Demands from tourism and industry, in particular, are straining the island’s supply, despite the fact that the island receives over 1,700 millimeters (67 inches) of rainfall annually.

The largest source of clean water in Bali comes from groundwater, with the largest groundwater users located in Denpasar, Gianyar, Jembrana, and Buleleng. The goal of the PES scheme is to rehabilitate critical lands that are concentrating on the upstream area of Ayung Watershed. To do this it will bring together Environmental Services Providers, Independent Organizations and Environmental Services Beneficiaries.

As part of the scheme, 20 infiltration wells on private and public lands will be constructed to overcome low soil permeability which results in reduced water supply and runoff-related disasters such as floods and erosion

Intern Role and Responsibilities: Your general role & responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Meet with local stakeholders
  • Research options for measuring and monitoring the effectiveness of the project
  • Determine which technology e.g sensors and software should be used for monitoring
  • Develop impact indicators to measure the effectiveness of the pilot project.
  • Kickstart project monitoring
  • Perform impact analysis of the effectiveness of infiltration wells.
