Here are some of our frequently asked questions:

Do I have to pay the non-refundable deposit if I expect to receive UCLA Financial Aid?

UCLA Travel Study 
  • Yes, all students are required to pay the $300 non-refundable deposit by the deadline to secure their spot on their program.
UCLA Global Internship Program
  • Yes, all students are required to pay the $300 non-refundable deposit by the deadline to secure their spot on their program.
UCEAP
  • This program does not require a deposit.

Will I need to cover any expenses prior to my financial aid disbursement?

Yes, students can expect to cover items such as the following for their program prior to financial aid disbursement:

  • $300 non-refundable deposit (if required)
  • Airline tickets
  • Housing deposits (if required)
  • Passport fees (if applicable)
  • Visa or entry fees (if applicable)
  • Health exams (if applicable)

Students will be provided with further information as it relates to their program.

Can I receive financial aid for my Study Abroad and Summer Session courses?

No, students can only receive financial aid for ONE summer program. For instance,

  • If you received financial aid for a Travel Study program and upon completion of that program decide to enroll at UCLA Summer Sessions, you will not be eligible to receive any additional financial aid for that session.
  • If you enroll simultaneously in Summer Sessions and the Global Internship Program, you will only receive financial aid for ONE of the two programs.

If I accept financial aid for my study abroad program, will my academic year financial aid be affected?

Summer program
  • For UCLA students, the federal loans you accept in summer affect the following academic year.
Academic Year program
  • For students who need federal loans for the following academic year, the UCLA Financial Aid Office will offer more Parent Plus and private loans to cover your summer program. We advise you to meet with your financial aid advisor to discuss your summer plans and learn more about the types of loans that will be offered to you.

When will I receive my financial aid award notification (FAN)?

All students should receive their eFAN for review at least one month before the start of their program.

When will I receive my financial aid funds (loans, grants, scholarships)?

Accepted financial aid disbursements are generally disbursed 5-10 days before your program start date.

  • UCLA Travel Study: Funds are disbursed to your BruinBill.
  • UCLA Global Internship Program: Funds are disbursed to your BruinBill.
  • UCEAP: Funds are disbursed to your UCEAP portal.

Financial Aid Refunds

We encourage all students to enroll for BruinDirect or eReund to ensure any applicable financial aid refunds are deposited directly to a student’s bank account. If students do not enroll in BruinDirect or eRefund, students will instead receive a mail paper check to their home address and will not have access to these refund funds during their study abroad program.
