Barcelona: The Story of a City, Its Art and Cultures

Barcelona is one of the most dynamic and exciting cities in Europe today, home of the 1992 Olympics, its own beaches, amazing architecture, cutting-edge cuisine, and a unique nightlife.  It is home to modernist architectural masterpieces, like the Sagrada Familia of Gaudà and served as an inspiration to artists like Picasso and DalÃ.  But it is also a city with a history going back several thousand years.  We will learn to read the story of this great city in its streets, neighborhoods, and byways.  Weaving lectures, walking tours, and short day trips into one, this program in Barcelona presents a twofold approach to the cultures of this capital of the region of Catalonia from pre-Roman village, through the Middle Ages (when it ruled a Mediterranean empire stretching as far as Greece) and onto the modern period when it became a center of Modernist art and fashion.  We will also study in depth the Barcelona of today, its cultural dynamism, its place in today’s Spain, and in the heart of Catalan culture.
This program involves a great deal of daily walking. Â You will be expected to walk 2 hours per day on average, as we tour parts of the city seldom seen by visitors. Â This will be a unique opportunity to become acquainted with and to gain an intimate knowledge of Barcelona which even long-time residents of the city do not have.
These courses are taught in English and all students with interests in the topics of these courses are welcome in the program, regardless of their major or minor (or home campus). Â We seek a diverse group, with a broad range of backgrounds, for the course. The program is best suited for sophomores and juniors, but seniors who need summer credits in order to complete their graduation requirements are also most welcome to the program.

Course Descriptions
SPAN 170: Barcelona – The Story of a City (4 units)
Prerequisites: None

SPAN 191B: Barcelona Today – Its Arts & Cultures (4 units)
Prerequisites: None
Notes: These two courses are taught jointly, and in English, so that students wishing to take them as cross-listed courses in History, Comp Lit or other departments (please speak with instructor) may participate. Â Students may elect to do the written work of the class in English, Spanish or Catalan. Â Students may be able to earn credit toward the new Digital Humanities Minor (if approved) through work for this class; please speak with instructor.
Optional Course
SPAN 199: Directed Research (4 units)
If desired, students may choose to enroll in one or two SPAN 199 courses in addition to the two required courses. There is an additional fee for the optional courses.
The requirements for Independent Research courses should be discussed with Prof. Dagenais and/or the TA. Â They will generally include a written research project, or other research project due at the send of Summer Sessions.
Students can enroll in optional courses by submitting the Optional Course Registration Form, as well as proof of instructor consent, to info@ieo.ucla.edu. You can enroll up until the Friday of the second week of your program.

Program fee includes registration and course fees, accommodations, program excursions and health insurance. Textbooks, museum entry fees*, optional courses, all meals, optional excursions, and any COVID-19 testing required for travel are additional.. *Please note that required museum entrance fees are included in the estimated ‘textbooks’ section above.

Document Fee
Non-UCLA students will be charged a $50 Document Fee. This is a one-time document fee which covers fees for first-class mailing of official transcripts, diploma and much more. IEI Fee
All undergraduate students will be charged a $61 IEI fee per summer. The IEI (Instructional Enhancement Initiative) fee is a course materials fee that is charged in order to support the use of technology in undergraduate education at UCLA.
Budgeting
We recommend that you budget accordingly to cover optional sightseeing, laundry, Internet cafes, emergencies, etc. Â How much to budget depends on your travel, entertainment, and souvenir choices. It is always best to overestimate your spending. Take the time to research the cost of living in your destination and the activities you want to participate in while abroad.
Purchasing Airfare
Please do not purchase airfare until instructed to do so by your Travel Study Program Coordinator.

Financial Aid
Financial aid for Travel Study programs is available to qualified UCLA students. All other students should inquire about financial aid at their home institution. For details about the financial aid application process, please visit the Financial Aid section of this website.
On Location
Accommodations
Students will stay in a student dormitory in Barcelona. Rooms are double occupancy, with shared bathroom and kitchen facilities.
UCLA Travel Study reserves the right to change housing location. Should this be necessary, we will arrange comparable accommodations elsewhere.
Meals
No meals are included. Accommodations include shared fully-equipped kitchens for preparing meals.
If you have strict dietary requirements, this program may not be able to accommodate your needs. Â Please let us know when you apply for the program if you have any special dietary needs, as well as any physical or medical conditions.
Excursions
There will be several walking tours and museum visits around the city of Barcelona. We also plan to visit Girona, Empuries, Montserrat, and Colonia Guell.
