What is Global Cities?Global Cities is a program that allows participants to study in two locations in one summer, while earning a quarter’s worth of academic credit. During Summer Session A, UCLA students join a selected group of students from the host university in either Barcelona or Milan. During Summer Session C, the whole group comes to UCLA.
Who can attend the Global Cities program?The Global Cities program is open to undergraduate UCLA students on a first-come, first-served basis. Students are required to be in good academic standing during the quarter prior to participation. Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.75 to attend Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (UCSC) in Milan and 3.0 to attend Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) in Barcelona.
How do I apply for the program?Complete the Global Cities online registration starting November 15, 2020. Be sure to read the registration information carefully. When you submit your application, you will receive a registration number on the screen and by e-mail. Be sure to keep this number for future reference. After submitting the application, our office will review it for approval. You will receive e-mails regarding your application status (a deposit is not required until your application has been approved by IEO).
Where can I find my registration number?Your registration number can be found in the subject line of your registration or confirmation e-mail. It is a one to four digit number. Contact IEO if you cannot locate the number.
How will I know if I have been admitted into the program?An e-mail notification will be sent to you upon completion of your application, informing you of the status of your application.
When is the last day to register for the program?We will accept registrations through April 1, 2021. However, all spaces are first-come, first-served for enrollment.
How do I pay the balance for my program?Final payments can be made via MyUCLA or by check at the Cashier’s Office in 1125 Murphy Hall. If you pay by credit/debit card, an additional 2.75% surcharge will be assessed. Payments by e-check will not incur this surcharge.
When can I begin making final payments?Students can begin to make final payments after enrollment is posted, in early March.
Can I register for more than one program?
No. The Global Cities program runs throughout the entire summer. You will be abroad during Summer Session A and at UCLA during Summer Session C.
Can I switch into another program?
Prior to April 10, 2020, you may switch into another Global Cities program if there are open spaces in the program you would like to switch into. You may not switch programs after the final payment deadline. To make a switch, retrieve your registration to make the update.
What materials do I need to submit with my application?– A one page Statement of Purpose (due during application)
– A scanned copy (in jpeg format) of the picture page of your passport (due by April 1).
– One passport style picture (due by April 1)
How do I get a passport?You will need to contact the nearest passport agency. Many post offices offer passport services. The passport process takes 10-12 weeks (expedited service is available for an additional fee). For more information, please visit U.S. Department of State.
Where do I upload my passport and photo? Retrieve your registration to upload your passport scan and photo. Enter your details and scroll down to the bottom on the next page.
I am having trouble uploading my files. What should I do? You may email the files to IEO and we will upload them on your behalf. If you do not have access to a scanner, stop by our office in 1332 Murphy Hall.
Do I need to get a visa?U.S. passport holders do not need a visa for short-term study in Italy or Spain. If you are traveling under a non-U.S. passport, you should check with the appropriate consulate.
Are there any immunizations required for my program?We recommend you visit the Centers for Disease Control’s website for more information about health and safety abroad.
When do I enroll in my selected courses?Once the course list for summer 2021 is available (mid-January), you will receive an email requesting your course selection. In order to secure your spot, you must submit a $300 non-refundable deposit payment through our secure online credit/debit card form. Applications received before January 15th, will have secured a place in the program until then. However, after January 15th, your place in the program cannot be guaranteed without the $300 deposit. All course enrollment will be processed by IEO.
Will the courses I take abroad transfer to UCLA?
Yes. All courses have been pre-approved by UCLA for credit transfer. Some courses will also fulfill language, GE and Diversity requirements. If you are looking into meeting major/minor requirements, you should consult with your academic advisor.
How do I request a transcript?After completing your summer program abroad, your transcript will be sent to IEO and we will submit it to the Registrar’s Office to post the credits.
How many units do I need to complete during the summer?Participants must be enrolled full-time for both sessions. That means, two courses abroad and two at UCLA. You will be earning 15+ units during the program. There is also an optional 199 course (4 units) available for Summer Session A. Financial aid eligible students may want to enroll in this course in order to increase the summer financial aid award.
Can I select any course I want?Students must select courses from the approved course list, which will be available mid-January. Petition to take another UCLA course may be accepted on a case-by-case basis.
What will my housing be like?Neither UCSC nor UPF have on-campus housing available. However, they have an agreement with third-party providers and can offer off-campus housing for a discounted price. Students must contact the providers directly to secure their housing. More information is provided on the Global Cities Website .
Can I provide my own housing?Yes. You can reserve your own housing.
How will I receive information about my program?It is very important that you submit an e-mail address that you check regularly when filling out your application. You will receive several notices by email with important information about your program.
How do I cancel my participation in my program?Please do not enroll in the Global Cities program unless you are sure you intend to participate. Remember that your deposit is nonrefundable. The cancellation deadline is April 10, 2021 at 5PM. Paid program fees (minus $300 nonrefundable deposit) are refundable until the cancellation deadline.
Can I change courses after submitting my course selection?As long as you select a course from the approved list, you can make changes. Please note that changes are subject to space availability.
